Microneedling

At Real You, we’re proud to offer Traditional Microneedling and Radiofrequency (RF) Microneedling. What’s the difference? Both are packed with benefits for your skin - see below.

Traditional Microneedling:

How It Works:
Microneedling involves using a device with fine, tiny needles that create controlled micro-injuries (or "micro-channels") in the skin. This stimulates the body’s natural healing process, triggering collagen and elastin production, which helps to improve skin texture, tone, and elasticity.

Key Benefits:

  • Improves skin texture and tone

  • Reduces the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles

  • Diminishes acne scars and hyperpigmentation

  • Minimally invasive with little downtime

  • Safe for most skin types

Best For:

  • General skin rejuvenation

  • Treating acne scars, stretch marks, or fine lines

  • Improving skin texture and firmness

Treatment Sensation:

  • You’ll feel slight discomfort during the procedure, but numbing cream is typically applied beforehand to minimize pain.

RF Microneedling:

How It Works:
RF microneedling combines traditional microneedling with radiofrequency energy. The microneedles create tiny channels in the skin, and at the same time, radiofrequency energy is delivered deep into the skin layers. This heat energy enhances collagen production and tightens the skin more effectively than traditional microneedling alone. The combination of microneedles and RF energy delivers more targeted and deeper stimulation for skin tightening.

Key Benefits:

  • Deeper collagen stimulation than traditional microneedling

  • Tightens and firms the skin while improving texture

  • Reduces fine lines, wrinkles, and sagging skin (especially beneficial for more mature skin)

  • Minimal downtime with visible results after fewer sessions

  • Can be used on both the face and body to treat more areas

Best For:

  • Skin laxity (sagging or loose skin)

  • Deep wrinkles and fine lines

  • Stretch marks, scars, and overall skin tightening

  • Treating more challenging skin concerns like laxity in the neck or jawline

Treatment Sensation:

  • RF microneedling may feel slightly more intense because of the combination of microneedles and radiofrequency heat. However, a numbing cream is applied beforehand to ensure comfort.

Which One Should You Choose?

  • Microneedling is great if you're looking to address surface-level concerns like mild wrinkles, acne scars, or general skin texture. It’s a good option for individuals with younger skin or those who want a rejuvenation treatment with minimal downtime.

  • Radiofrequency Microneedling is better suited for those who need more noticeable skin tightening and deeper rejuvenation, especially for sagging or more mature skin. The RF energy adds an extra level of intensity to target deeper layers, making it ideal for tightening and firming skin along with improving overall texture.

  • To achieve the best results from your microneedling treatment and minimize any risks or discomfort, it's important to follow these preparation steps. Here's what you should do leading up to your appointment:

    1–2 Weeks Before Your Treatment:

    • Avoid Retinoids & Exfoliants: Discontinue use of products containing retinol, tretinoin, or strong exfoliating acids (like glycolic or salicylic acid) 1–2 weeks before your treatment. These can increase skin sensitivity.

    • No Waxing or Hair Removal: Avoid waxing, threading, or depilatory creams in the treatment area 1–2 weeks prior to your appointment to reduce the risk of irritation.

    • Limit Sun Exposure: Stay out of the sun as much as possible, and if you do go outside, wear a broad-spectrum sunscreen (SPF 30+). Sunburned skin is more sensitive and can hinder the healing process after microneedling.

    3–5 Days Before:

    • Avoid Active Skin Treatments: Skip any chemical peels, facials, or laser treatments in the days leading up to your appointment. These may irritate your skin and interfere with the microneedling procedure.

    • Hydrate Your Skin: Use a hydrating moisturizer to keep your skin nourished. Microneedling works best on well-hydrated skin, which makes the process smoother and more effective.

    The Day of Your Treatment:

    • Cleanse Your Skin: Arrive with a clean, makeup-free face. Wash your skin gently with a mild cleanser to remove dirt, oil, and any products.

    • Avoid Makeup & Skincare Products: Don’t wear makeup, lotions, or SPF on the day of your treatment. Your skin needs to be free of any barriers that could affect the microneedling process.

    • Disclose Medical History: Let your provider know if you’re on any medications or have certain health conditions (like active acne, eczema, or cold sores). These factors may affect how the treatment is performed.

    What to Avoid:

    • No Tanning or Sunburns: Sunburned or heavily tanned skin can be too sensitive for microneedling, so make sure you’re not sunburned before your appointment.

    • Avoid Blood Thinners: If you’re on blood-thinning medications (like aspirin), consult with your provider to determine if you need to stop taking them for a few days before your treatment.

    • Stay Hydrated: Drink plenty of water in the days leading up to your treatment. Hydrated skin responds better to microneedling.

  • After your microneedling treatment, your skin will be in rejuvenation mode! To maximize your results and promote healthy healing, follow these post-treatment care guidelines carefully:

    The First 24–48 Hours:

    • Keep Your Skin Hydrated: Immediately after the procedure, your skin may feel tight and slightly dry. Apply a gentle, hydrating moisturizer recommended by your provider to keep your skin nourished and prevent dryness.

    • Avoid Touching Your Skin: Try not to touch or pick at your skin, as this can introduce bacteria and cause irritation or infection.

    • No Makeup for 24 Hours: Give your skin a chance to breathe and heal. Wait at least 24 hours before applying makeup to avoid clogging pores or causing irritation.

    • Avoid Sun Exposure: Your skin will be more sensitive to UV rays for a few days. Avoid direct sunlight, and make sure to wear broad-spectrum sunscreen (SPF 30 or higher) if you must go outside. Protective hats and clothing are recommended.

    2–7 Days After the Treatment:

    • Gentle Cleansing: Use a mild, non-exfoliating cleanser with lukewarm water to wash your face. Avoid hot water, as it can irritate the skin and increase redness.

    • Apply Soothing Products: Keep using a calming, hydrating serum or moisturizer as directed by your provider. Products with hyaluronic acid or peptides can help soothe and nourish the skin.

    • Peeling or Flaking: It’s normal to experience light peeling or flaking as the skin heals and sheds the outer layers. Let the skin peel naturally; don’t pull or scrub at it, as this can cause scarring.

    • Avoid Sweating & Intense Workouts: For the first 48–72 hours, avoid activities that cause excessive sweating (like intense exercise or hot saunas), as sweat can irritate your skin and hinder the healing process.

    7–10 Days After:

    • Resume Regular Skincare: You can gradually reintroduce your regular skincare routine, but avoid products with active ingredients like retinol, acids, or exfoliants for at least a week or as advised by your provider.

    • Be Extra Sun-Smart: Continue to protect your skin from the sun for a few weeks. Your skin will be more sensitive to UV rays, and exposure can cause pigmentation changes.

    Things to Avoid:

    • No Scrubbing or Exfoliating: Don’t use physical exfoliants or scrubs on your skin for at least one week after the procedure.

    • No Tanning or Tanning Beds: Stay away from tanning beds and avoid getting a tan for a few weeks after your microneedling session.

    • Avoid Hot Showers & Saunas: For the first few days, avoid hot showers, saunas, or anything that could expose your skin to extreme heat, as it can irritate and dry out the treated area.

    • Avoid Blood Thinners & Alcohol: Refrain from using alcohol or blood-thinning medications for at least 24–48 hours after the treatment to reduce the risk of bruising or irritation.

CO2 LASER RESURFACING

WITH RF MICRONEEDLING

Combining both treatments can significantly enhance the skin rejuvenation process. The CO2 laser resurfacing targets superficial skin issues and deeply rejuvenates the outer layers, while RF microneedling works on deeper layers to tighten, tone, and promote collagen production. Together, they can address multiple skin concerns more comprehensively.

How the Combination Works:

  1. Superficial & Deep Skin Rejuvenation: The CO2 laser targets superficial skin imperfections like pigmentation, texture, and fine lines, while RF microneedling stimulates collagen in deeper layers to improve skin firmness and elasticity.

  2. Enhanced Results: Combining these two treatments can lead to faster, more noticeable improvements in overall skin tone, texture, and firmness.

  3. Complementary Healing: While CO2 resurfacing requires more downtime, RF microneedling has minimal downtime, so patients can still experience improvements in skin texture during the recovery period of the laser treatment.

  4. Customizable Treatments: Our practitioners can customize the intensity of both procedures to suit your specific needs, ensuring the most effective treatment plan for your skin type.

  • 1. Consultation with Your Provider

    • Discuss Medical History: Ensure your practitioner is aware of any medical conditions, allergies, or medications you are taking (especially if you’re on medications that affect healing, like Accutane or blood thinners).

    • Skin Assessment: Your provider will assess your skin type, concerns, and goals to determine if this combined treatment is right for you.

    2. Discontinue Certain Skincare Products

For at least 5 to 7 days before your treatment, your provider may recommend temporarily stopping the use of certain skincare products that can irritate the skin or interfere with healing, such as:

    • Retinoids (Retin-A, retinol)

    • Alpha hydroxy acids (AHAs) or beta hydroxy acids (BHAs)

    • Vitamin C serums

    • Exfoliating scrubs or peels
These products can make the skin more sensitive and increase the risk of irritation or damage during the procedures.

    3. Avoid Sun Exposure

    • Sun Protection: For 2 weeks prior to treatment, avoid prolonged sun exposure. If you must be outdoors, always wear a high SPF sunscreen (SPF 30 or higher) and seek shade.

    • Tanning Beds: Avoid tanning beds for 4 weeks before treatment, as both the CO2 laser and RF microneedling work best on healthy, untanned skin. Sunburned or tanned skin is more sensitive and more prone to adverse reactions.

    4. Hydrate Your Skin

    • Moisturize: In the days leading up to the procedure, ensure your skin is well-hydrated by using a gentle, hydrating moisturizer. This will help the skin recover better after both treatments.

    • Hydrate Your Body: Drink plenty of water to ensure your skin is fully hydrated from the inside out. Well-hydrated skin tends to heal faster.

    5. Avoid Blood Thinners & Certain Medications

    • Discontinue blood thinners like aspirin, ibuprofen, and certain herbal supplements (like garlic, ginger, or ginkgo biloba) for at least 7 days prior to the procedure, as they can increase the risk of bruising or bleeding.

    • Accutane Users: If you have been on Accutane (isotretinoin) in the past year, you may not be a good candidate for CO2 laser resurfacing. The drug affects skin healing and could cause complications, so be sure to disclose this during your consultation.

    6. Clean, Bare Skin

On the day of the treatment:

    • Arrive with Clean Skin: Make sure your face is clean and free of makeup, sunscreen, and other products. Avoid using any products that could interfere with the procedure.

    • No Lotion or Oil: Do not apply moisturizers, oils, or creams to your skin on the day of the treatment as these can create a barrier for the laser and RF microneedling.

    7. Avoid Smoking & Alcohol

    • Smoking slows down healing and can lead to complications. Avoid smoking for at least 2 weeks before and after the procedure.

    • Alcohol can also increase swelling and bruising. It’s best to avoid alcohol for at least 48 hours before your treatment.

    8. Arrange for Aftercare Support

    • Plan for Recovery: You may experience swelling, redness, and discomfort after the procedure, and it can take a few days to start seeing the full results. Arrange for someone to help you with daily activities for the first 24 hours if needed.

    • Post-Treatment Care: Your provider will give you specific post-care instructions, which may include using a mild cleanser, applying a healing ointment, and avoiding makeup for a few days. Make sure you understand what you need to do after the procedure.

  • Aftercare is crucial to ensure optimal results and a smooth recovery following CO2 laser resurfacing and RF microneedling. Since both treatments involve stimulating the skin at different depths, it's important to follow the aftercare instructions carefully to minimize complications, reduce healing time, and enhance the results.

Here’s a detailed aftercare guide for each procedure, along with combined treatment aftercare:

    1. Immediately After the Procedure

    • Cooling & Comfort:

      • Cool compresses or an ice pack (wrapped in a soft cloth) can help soothe the skin and reduce swelling in the first 24 hours.

      • Apply moisturizing gel (like aloe vera) to the treated area if recommended by your provider.

    • Numbing Effects:

      • You may still feel a bit of numbness or tightness in your skin for a few hours after the procedure, but this will fade as the numbing agents wear off.

    2. Managing Swelling & Redness

    • Swelling & Redness:

      • Swelling and redness are common and may peak 2–3 days after treatment. Applying cold compresses in 10-minute intervals during the first 24 hours can help minimize swelling.

      • Elevate your head while sleeping for the first few nights to reduce swelling.

    • Avoid Touching the Face:

      • Do not rub or touch the treated area, as this can irritate the skin or introduce bacteria. Let the skin heal naturally.

    • Medication:

      • Your provider may prescribe pain relief medications or over-the-counter pain relievers like Tylenol (acetaminophen) to ease discomfort. Avoid taking NSAIDs (e.g., ibuprofen) as they can increase bruising.

    3. Skin Care in the First Week

    • Cleansing:

      • Use gentle cleansers like a mild, hydrating, non-exfoliating cleanser (e.g., a fragrance-free gentle gel or cream) for the first 3–7 days.

      • Avoid any exfoliating products or scrubs, as they can irritate the skin while it is healing.

    • Moisturizing:

      • Keep the skin hydrated with a gentle moisturizer. Look for one that's fragrance-free and formulated for sensitive skin.

      • Healing ointments like Aquaphor or petroleum jelly may be recommended to keep the skin moist and promote healing.

      • Apply moisturizer several times a day to keep the skin from becoming too dry or flaky.

    • Avoid Makeup:

      • Do not wear makeup for the first 5–7 days to avoid irritation and potential infection. Once the skin starts to heal and the redness subsides, you can slowly reintroduce makeup, but make sure it’s non-comedogenic (won’t clog pores).

    • Hydration:

      • Drink plenty of water to keep your skin hydrated from the inside out.

    4. Sun Protection

    • Avoid Sun Exposure:

      • Avoid direct sun exposure for at least 2 weeks after the procedure. Your skin will be extremely sensitive and vulnerable to damage.

      • Wear a wide-brimmed hat and sunglasses to protect your face if you must be outdoors.

    • Sunscreen:

      • Apply broad-spectrum sunscreen (SPF 30 or higher) every 2 hours while you’re outside. Zinc oxide or titanium dioxide-based sunscreens are usually recommended, as they are gentle on healing skin.

    5. Managing Peeling & Flaking

    • Peeling and Flaking:

      • Peeling may start around 3–5 days post-treatment and can last for up to 7–10 days. This is normal and part of the healing process.

      • Do not pick or peel the skin yourself as this can cause scarring or pigmentation changes. Let the skin naturally shed.

    • Avoid Scratching:

      • If your skin feels itchy during healing, apply a cooling gel or moisturizer to relieve discomfort. Never scratch or rub your face, as this can damage the new skin layer forming underneath.

    6. Avoid Certain Activities

    • Exercise & Sweating:

      • Avoid intense physical activities, heavy sweating, or working out for at least 7–10 days after the procedure to reduce the risk of irritation or infection.

      • Do not swim in pools, saunas, or hot tubs for the first 2–3 weeks to prevent any bacterial contamination.

    • Hot Showers or Baths:

      • Avoid hot showers or baths immediately after the procedure as the heat can increase swelling and discomfort. Use lukewarm water and avoid steam exposure for at least a few days.

    7. Post-Treatment Skin Care for RF Microneedling

    • RF Microneedling Care:

      • After RF microneedling, the treated area may appear slightly red or swollen. This typically subsides within 24–48 hours.

      • Continue using a gentle moisturizer to soothe and hydrate the skin.

      • Avoid using active ingredients (like retinol, acids, or exfoliants) for at least 7–10 days to avoid irritation.

    8. Follow-Up Appointments

    • Check-ups: Your provider may schedule follow-up appointments to monitor the healing process and make sure there are no complications.

    • Laser Settings & Adjustments: If you are combining CO2 laser with RF microneedling over multiple sessions, your provider will assess your skin’s progress and adjust future treatments accordingly.

    9. Long-Term Care

    • Skin Care Routine:

      • After the initial recovery phase, you can return to your regular skincare routine, but be sure to include gentle exfoliation and hydration.

      • Consider incorporating collagen-stimulating products like peptides and Vitamin C to enhance the benefits from the treatment.

What to Watch For (Potential Complications)

    • Infection: Though rare, if you notice unusual swelling, pus, or increased redness around the treated area, contact your provider immediately.

    • Hyperpigmentation or Hypopigmentation: Some people may experience temporary dark spots or lighter areas where the skin has healed. This can resolve over time but may require additional treatments.
